The Chemistry Olympiad is a multi-tiered competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. Each year, four students are chosen to represent the United States team at the International Chemistry Olympiad competition. The Chemistry Olympiad consists of the following four stages:
- Local Chemistry Olympiad Exam
- U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Competition
- Study Camp
- International Chemistry Olympiad
The Midland Section organizes and coordinates Local and U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad competitions under the auspices of the American Chemical Society.
228 students representing twelve high schools from the Midland Section geographic area participated this year in the Local Exam. Ten Local competition winners from Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties took part in the 2019 National Exam on April 27th at Saginaw Valley State University. All the students who took part in the Chemistry Olympiad were recognized, and the National exam participants also received awards at the Recognition Banquet in Midland on May 1st.
