This committee offers assistance to area teachers in the form of workshops. We develop materials and do hands-on professional development programs of 4-6 hr in length; these are free and can be requested. Continuing education credits can also be arranged for attendees; all materials are provided. Three programs currently offered are “Bringing Science to Life in the Classroom” (available since 1990), and “Sci Tech Next Generation” Parts 1 and 2. The latter were developed in 2014 to be compliant with Next Generation Science Standards; these offer many different activities with specific information and procedures, not all of which can be done in any one workshop program. Workshops are often offered at Michigan Science Teacher meetings and/or during Pittcon Science Week.
The Science Coaching program is funded separately by National ACS; it involves a one-to-one relationship between a science professional and an educator, wherein the professional offers assistance in forms that are meaningful to the teacher, such as stock room cleanout, science fair arrangements, speaker or field trip assistance, personal behind-the scenes consultation, or classroom hands-on programs. Teachers in such relationships receive $500 from National for use in their classrooms.
